Research: Pre-Birth Iconic Music Videos

The music video that we have chosen as one of the most iconic music videos before our birth, is Madonna’s Like A Prayer’. Released in 1989 the strong religious views caused a lot of controversy, but none the less it has become one of, or is sometimes considered the iconic music video of the late 1980’s.

The lyrics of the music video for ‘Like A Prayer’ are:

 Life is a mystery,
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

[Chorus:]
When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

I hear your voice, it's like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, Oh God I think I'm falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

[Chorus x2]
Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like...

[Chorus x2 (with Choir)]
(Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me)

These strong lyrics helped to produce a music video that is remembered by many, even if it is remembered for many controversial reasons.

The narrative of the music video:
It starts with a woman that witnesses the rape and murder of another woman (this is one of the reasons why the music video is considered controversial). The woman stands back whilst a black man also witnesses the crime and goes to try and help the woman who is being attacked. When the police arrive the black man is falsely accused of the crime (one of the second reasons why the music video is considered controversial). The woman then runs of into a church, where she sees a stature of a black saint that closely resembles the black man that she just witnessed being falsely accused for the rape and murder of another woman. The woman in the church wishers a prayer and the stature of the saint can be seen to be shedding a tear. The woman then falls into a dream where a woman catches her and throwers her back into reality telling her that she has to do the right thing. Whilst the woman is still dreaming the statue of the saint comes to life and kisses the woman on the forehead and then walks out of the church. The woman then cuts her hand with a knife, this wakes her up and then she decides to go to the jail and tell the police that the black man is innocent. The music video ends with the entire cast taking a bow and then the curtains close.

How it was controversial:
When the music video for ‘Like a Prayer’ was released the critics charged that the video was ‘Sacrilegious’ and ‘a slap in the face’ to people of faith. The up raw that was caused by the releasing of the music video led to the withdrawal of a $5 million contract with Pepsi for their ad campaign, along with the suggestion that Madonna ‘Ought to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church’.

On the charts:
‘Like a Prayer’ made it to number one in the US, the album of ‘Like a prayer also made it to the top of the charts. The song was also very popular world wide, reaching number one on the 15 nation Eurochart hot 100 singles, along with topping several different countries national charts (such as: Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway)
